Android’s most significant advantage over iOS — its depth of customization and the range of system-level access available to users — is also the thing most Android users never fully explore. The default Android experience from Samsung, Google, or any other manufacturer is configured for the lowest common denominator of user expectation; the additional capabilities available below the surface represent a significantly more capable operating system than most users experience.

Android varies significantly between manufacturers (Samsung’s One UI, Google’s Pixel UI, OnePlus’s OxygenOS, and others have different implementations), so the specific menu paths differ. The features described here are available in most Android implementations but may require slightly different navigation depending on the device.

Developer Options: The Hidden Menu Worth Unlocking

Android hides a Developer Options menu by default — tap the build number in Settings > About Phone > Software Information seven times rapidly to unlock it. The menu that appears contains features that genuinely improve daily use alongside the developer-specific tools it was designed for.

Useful Developer Options for everyday users: USB debugging (required for some advanced file management tools), Limit background processes (restricts how many apps run simultaneously in the background — improves battery life on devices with limited RAM), Animator scale settings (reducing Window, Transition, and Animator Duration Scale from 1x to 0.5x makes the phone feel dramatically faster by halving the animation duration), and Force 4x MSAA (improves graphics quality in apps that support it). The animation scale change is the most impactful single setting change for making an Android device feel snappier without any hardware change.

Per-App Language Settings and Customization

Android 13 and later support setting language per-app (Settings > System > Language > App Language), allowing the OS to display in one language while specific apps display in another. For multilingual users — someone who uses their phone primarily in English but wants their media or communication apps in another language — this per-app control eliminates the previous choice between full-system language change or accepting the system language in all apps.

App pinning (Settings > Biometrics and Security > App Pinning, or Security > Advanced settings depending on manufacturer) locks the phone to a single app, requiring authentication to exit — useful for giving the phone to a child for a specific app, or for kiosk-like single-app use. Guest mode (available in Quick Settings > Long-press user icon, or Settings > Users) creates a clean secondary user account with no access to personal data or apps — the privacy-preserving option when lending your phone.

The Hidden Back Gesture Sensitivity and Navigation Customization

Android’s gesture navigation sensitivity is adjustable in a way most users don’t know exists: in Settings > System > Gestures > System Navigation, with gesture navigation selected, there’s a sensitivity slider for the back gesture. The default setting triggers back gesture from a relatively wide area of the screen edge, which often interferes with app UI elements near the edge. Adjusting this sensitivity reduces unintended back gestures triggered by in-app swipes.

The one-handed mode (Settings > Advanced Features > One-Handed Mode on Samsung; Settings > System > Gestures > One-Handed Mode on Pixel) shrinks the display to the bottom half of the screen — the equivalent of iPhone’s Reachability. Swipe down from the middle of the screen bottom to toggle it on/off. For large-screen phones used one-handed, this feature makes top-of-screen UI elements reachable without repositioning the hand.

Clipboard Manager and System-Level Text Tools

Android’s system clipboard manager (accessible by tapping the clipboard icon in the keyboard toolbar) stores recent clipboard items — solving the ‘I copied something but then copied something else and lost the first thing’ problem that causes many people to paste immediately rather than copying multiple items. Clipboard history retention varies by manufacturer; Samsung Gboard retains 20+ items, stock Android retains fewer but still multiple clips.

Smart text selection is a feature most users have experienced without knowing it’s a feature: when you select a phone number, address, or date in a text, Android identifies the type and offers contextual actions (call the number, navigate to the address, add the date to calendar). Long-pressing text in many apps also triggers entity recognition that offers these contextual actions even without explicit selection. This system-level understanding of text content removes steps from common workflows that were previously multi-app tasks.
