‘Wearable technology’ in public consciousness is dominated by the smartwatch — a relatively mature product category where the design space is well-explored and the differentiation between products is incremental. The actual wearable technology landscape in 2026 is significantly wider: smart glasses with AI assistance and augmented reality overlays, hearables with increasingly sophisticated audio AI, smart rings that provide passive health monitoring, and specialized wearables for health monitoring in clinical contexts are all active and developing categories.

Several of these categories have moved from concept or early prototype to consumer products with genuine utility in the past 24 months. Understanding what’s available, what it actually does, and who it actually benefits helps evaluate the category beyond the marketing language.

Smart Glasses: The Long Road to Actually Useful

Smart glasses have a history of prominent concept products that failed to achieve mainstream adoption: Google Glass (2013) was ahead of its time and created a social backlash over privacy concerns; multiple subsequent attempts didn’t reach meaningful commercial scale. The Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses (2023-2025) represent the most commercially successful smart glasses product to date — conventional eyewear form factor with an AI assistant (Meta AI) that can see what you’re looking at and answer questions about it, take photos and short videos, and play audio through open-ear speakers.

The practical utility of Ray-Ban Meta glasses for early adopters has been reported positively for specific use cases: hands-free information lookup while working on something, quick photo capture without reaching for a phone, and the spatial computing integration when used with Meta’s AR features. The limitations are equally real: battery life of a few hours of active use, limited app ecosystem, and the social awareness of wearing computing hardware that looks nearly identical to regular glasses.

Smart Rings: Passive Health Tracking in a Minimal Form Factor

Smart rings (Oura Ring, Samsung Galaxy Ring) provide continuous health monitoring — heart rate, heart rate variability, skin temperature, blood oxygen saturation, movement — in a form factor that’s smaller and lighter than any smartwatch and doesn’t require daily charging (most rings last 4-7 days per charge). For users who want health data without the notification management burden of a smartwatch, the ring form factor provides the monitoring without the distraction.

Oura Ring’s sleep tracking has clinical research validation that most consumer wearables don’t — multiple studies have compared Oura’s sleep stage detection to polysomnography with favorable results. For users for whom sleep monitoring is the primary health tracking interest, the Oura Ring’s accuracy combined with its unobtrusive form factor and long battery life make it a more appropriate tool than a smartwatch whose sleep tracking is a secondary feature.

Hearables: Earbuds Becoming Health Devices

Premium earbuds (AirPods Pro, Bose QuietComfort Ultra, Sony WF-1000XM5) now include sensors and software that position them as health monitoring devices alongside audio accessories. AirPods Pro’s Hearing Health features (hearing protection notifications, Conversation Boost for those with mild hearing difficulty, and a clinical-grade Hearing Test that produces an audiogram equivalent) represent Apple extending into hearing health in ways that blur the line between consumer audio product and medical device.

The audiometric testing capability of AirPods Pro (added in iOS 18) is particularly notable: it provides a hearing assessment that previously required a clinical appointment and audiological equipment. The clinical validation of this in-ear assessment against traditional audiometry has been positive enough that Apple has sought and received FDA clearance for the hearing test feature — making it the first consumer audio product with this clinical designation.

Clinical Wearables: The Professional-Consumer Gap

A separate tier of health wearables operates in medical device classification rather than consumer wellness classification: continuous glucose monitors (CGM) worn as patches on the arm that provide real-time glucose readings without finger sticks, continuous blood pressure monitors that eliminate the cuff, and cardiac monitoring patches for multi-day ECG recording. These devices are increasingly available to consumers in some markets without requiring a clinical prescription.

Dexterity CGM and Libre Sense (designed for metabolic monitoring in non-diabetics, available in some EU markets without prescription) have created a category of continuous glucose monitoring for general wellness and athletic performance optimization. The data from continuous glucose monitoring — seeing exactly how specific foods, exercise, and stress affect blood glucose throughout the day — is genuinely novel information for most users, and the research on its utility for non-diabetic health optimization is actively developing.
